Mid-century treasure in Titirangi is a rare slice of New Zealand history

Just as villas, bungalows and state houses hold a special place in our national history so too does the slightly-harder-to-come-by style of mid-century architecture.

After gaining momentum around the globe, this modernist style of design was imported to New Zealand and tweaked to reflect our way of life. Known for their good bones, soaring heights, dynamics spaces and wonderful connection to the outdoors, this design of home and living is more relevant today than ever.

A few of these gems lie tucked away in the Titirangi treetops, held on to by their owners with protective fervour, and are only very occasionally parted with. So, it’s all the more remarkable that this rare piece of late mid-century architecture is now on the market for the first time since it was built over 40 years ago.

Designed by award winning architect and patron of the arts Kelvin Grant, this home reflects Grant’s penchant for creating flexible spaces through his work on social and community projects.

Sitting on a sweeping 1000m2 site surrounded by mature, native bush, the house stretches over three floors with the four bedrooms, bathroom and living area flowing off from the striking central stairwell.

The home has been preserved as a pristine example of the period, with many of the original features largely untouched, including the built-in lofts in some of the bedrooms and double height ceiling with exposed timber braces in the living room – an enduring testament to this innovative style of design.

Light also plays an important role throughout the home and careful attention has been paid to the orientation of the sun with large expanses of glass enveloping the house. The result is a bright, airy home that feels suspended amongst the trees, no matter what room you’re in.

From the living room, impressive full height windows look out to a generous deck, complete with spa pool and bird song. It’s open yet private with the considered indoor outdoor flow making the space perfect for year round entertaining and comfortable family living.

It’s not often a home with such a high-calibre of heritage located within walking distance of Titirangi Village becomes available. The current owners are reluctantly letting go of this mid-century masterpiece to move closer to family in the South Island.
