This 1970s Freemans Bay home is an exercise in modern elegance

Article by Homes to Love

The twentieth century gave rise to some of the most enduring architectural styles, from the classic state house to art deco, modernist and postmodern homes.

This 1970s Freemans Bay home is an exercise in modern elegance

The Freemans Bay area is highly sought after, minutes away from the CBD, galleries, and world class restaurants. This is a perfect contemporary home quintessential for any inner-city buyer.

Freemans Bay, still today consists predominately of colonial style homes and villas built in the early 1900s, but around the 1970s, a movement of gentrification in housing in Freeman’s Bay and surrounding areas took place. Instead of renovating, the architects of this home took reference from overseas and built a house that embraced modern living.

Built on a compact 333m2 site, it was designed by Swan Railley Paterson architects, who had a vision of sophistication and simplicity. They chose to use exposed ceiling beams which act as in-built sculptures, transforming each room with beautiful shadows which change continuously depending on the sun’s position.

The use of varying levels and impressive high ceilings make each space light and airy. The multiple outdoor areas and sweeping windows are all positioned to exploit the sun and flood the home with natural light, adding to the feeling of spaciousness.

Large expanses of glass wrap the house framing the astounding view of Auckland City’s CBD. Forget star gazing, the view at night comes second to none and is a sight the owners still find remarkable, close to four decades later.

The various levels of the home maximise the view, particularly on the main living level,, where the window picturesquely frames the Sky Tower.

The middle floor harbours the kitchen and lounge area, with French doors opening out onto a generous deck. The various outdoor areas are used to extend the space from in-door to outdoor, ideal for al fresco dining on a warm summer night and taking in the cityscape.

Head down to the lower levels where there is spacious self-contained private living, suitable for guests, extended family or a tennage retreat.

Here is a New Zealand built modern home from the late 1970s displaying relevancy and design that reflects how we live today. This house is a true testament to the ability of forward thinking and innovative design to create something both of its time and timeless.
