A neutral guest bedroom is transformed into tropical kid’s room

Mathilde, 7, is the daughter of Tina Stephen head of online interior decorating company Roomie. They moved into their new home last year and Mathilde’s bedroom was originally a guest room with a neutral colour palette.

They wanted to avoid a ‘girly’ look, and since the house is on a beautiful bush site in Titirangi, Auckland, they thought a ‘jungle’ theme would be apt. The room is quite large so they wanted it to feel cohesive and welcoming.

The solution

  • Mathilde had been gifted a Flox Risograph print (now framed and displayed near the bed), which was the initial inspiration for the jungle room since it had vibrant green and soft pink colourways. We also set up a Pinterest board of ideas and chose four feature colours. This was the main focus for the room and set the scene for the rest of the fitout.
  • To avoid painting the entire room (there are high ceilings and lots of windows), we commissioned illustrator Emma Scheltema to paint a mural on the south-facing wall.
  • The Burrow & Be ‘Crossing the Jungle’ duvet set works perfectly with the fresh green and white palette.
  • A pop of colour and texture has been added with a Gerty Brown cushion in a tropical fabric.
  • To balance the colours in Emma’s mural, Sydney Paper Flowers created a cut-paper ‘mural’ of tropical fronds, echoing the same shapes and hues. This was hung above the bed to accentuate the height of the room.
  • A simple Mocka desk with a painted vintage stool sits in the corner, while two custom-made Gerty Brown beanbags, positioned next to Mocka book-storage crates, creates a reading corner overlooking the bush.

After

Mathilde says

“I like my jungle room because my bed is snuggly and covered in my favourite animals, and it is the sunniest room in the house. I love my mural because it has my favourite paint colour, ‘Alexandra’, in it.”
