Bathroom

This architect shares what he did to achieve such a crisp bathroom design

Article by Homes to Love

By getting creative with the material palette and hardware, architect Daniel Marshall was able to achieve a crisp new bathroom that maximises storage

A good bathroom gets the balance between functionality and luxury just right. And that’s exactly what the bathroom in this new build by Daniel Marshall of Daniel Marshall Architects has achieved.

The Brief

Daniel says the brief for the bathroom was to create something that felt minimal and sculptural while still being practical for everyday living. Featuring clean lines, a crisp palette and decorative tile feature, this bathroom breaks the trend for an all-white look in a subtle yet striking way.

Style

Daniel has managed to make a statement by exercising restraint in his detailing and material choices. The hexagonal shape of the tiles adds unique character and interest to the bathroom. While their careful notes of colour and subtle texture bring a wonderfully tactile feel to the space.

Storage

While the floor tiles add interest, the true star of the show in this bathroom is the custom-made floating vanity. Cleverly designed to run the length of the wall for maximum surface and storage space, the vanity has a sculptural feel to it. By using Corian® Solid Surface for the vanity, Daniel was able to achieve clean lines and slight contours that feel light and effortless.

“The concept was for the vanities to appear as if they were carved from a single slab of stone, all while maintaining the practicalities of storage and ease of cleaning,” explains Daniel.

Fixtures and fittings

To keep the space clean and uncluttered and to make storage simple, the vanity features deep, generous drawers. Made using Blum’s LEGRABOX, these soft close drawers have a slimline design that matches the vanity style.

But achieving this style by completely constructing the vanity out of Corian® Glacier White came with some challenges. Due to the thickness of the material, Daniel needed fixtures for the drawers that wouldn’t compromise the design. Blum’s EXPANDO T fixing system which features innovative technology that’s specifically designed for thin materials was the ideal choice.

Daniel says what makes EXPANDO T different is you don’t have to add extra layers of materials just to fix your surface to the drawer. “This hardware is designed to carry just the materiality of the solid surface, not requiring a substrate.” This allows you to get creative material possibilities when designing your cabinetry.

The finished product

Now the bathroom is finished the owners can enjoy a light and airy space that has been specifically designed to make busy family life easy and functional. Daniel says the owners love how sophisticated their new bathroom looks and says the usability is one of their favourite things about it.
