Here at Your Home and Garden, we love nothing more than scrolling through real estate listings and finding our favourite homes. We’re dreaming of days spent in large entertainers’ kitchens, moving between the pool and the spa, or simply enjoying an evening watching the sun go down from the comfort of our living room.
Each team member has selected a property on the market that reflects their vision for the ultimate living space. We’re looking at location, design, pools and gardens to see how the home will fit into our ideal lifestyle – whether that be hosting friends al fresco or close proximity to the beach for daily swims. Amazingly, the answers were all very different. Yes, some of them are among New Zealand’s most expensive homes, but others are more subdued and cosy. From Fiona’s dreamy villa tucked away on a private island to Angela’s modernist masterpiece, everyone’s favourite homes were very different, revealing our very different tastes and ideas.
Our favourite homes

Private Island Bliss
CV: POA, Sotheby’s
“Last time I was in the virtual market for my dream place, this ‘private island sanctuary’ came my runner up. But I’m totally here for the ultimate WFH place on Motuarohia Island, in balmy Russell this month, especially as it’s still on the market.
“It’s highly unlikely I’d actually get the magazine out holed up here, though, as it’s like the ultimate wellness retreat with a heated plunge pool, beautiful grounds and a fabulous deck with an outdoor fireplace. Let’s not forget the private mooring and helipad. Someone should let Anna Mowbray know.”

Waterfront living redefined
CV: $2,710,000, Ray White
“As soon as the weather starts to turn crisp, I long for the lakes. The southern lakes, that is. There’s something about autumn that just makes me want to escape Auckland’s constant drizzle and get down to the crisp freeze of Queenstown. This Frankton abode is about as lakefront as you can get without being physically in the water.
“With epic views at every turn, I would spend my days here with the fire lit, working my way through a stack of reads or just shrivelling into a prune in the freestanding bath. Don’t worry about missing me, Auckland friends. There’s plenty of room for everyone to come and stay in the many guest rooms and bunk beds. As soon as it hits 5 pm – okay, 2 pm – we’ll be cracking open a few bottles of Central Otago pinot noir from the wine cellar and getting to work cooking a feast in that chef’s kitchen.”

Oriental Bay Grandstand
CV: $4,570,000, Lowe & Co
“If I were to flutter back to the nest and enjoy all the weather Wellington had to offer, a harbour view would be front of my mind. Just minutes from Courtney Place and Oriental Bay, surrounded by hospitality offering wine and fries, I would feel right at home with this delightful, fully renovated villa.
“After trudging up the hill from the local wine bar, we’ll have our choice of living areas to spend the rest of the evening. Be it the main lounge with sunset views, the sheltered courtyard (I’ll add a wood-fired pizza and a bar, of course) or the second living space with a couple of board games, time spent here will fly by.”

Herne Bay Beauty
CV: $8,800,000, Bayleys
“The wonderful thing about this spacious property is that, while its exterior blends seamlessly with the grand heritage villas in the neighbourhood, everything inside is entirely new except for the original fireplace and front door. The home has undergone an extensive renovation where no expense or detail has been spared, leaving you with nothing to do but move in and make it your own.
“I’m thinking abstract art on the walls to add allure to the pared-back canvas, and a curved modular couch in the main living space to bring the whole family together. Naturally, this home has mastered indoor-outdoor flow and is an entertainer’s dream—perfect for gathering loved ones and serving as the ultimate party hub.”

A holy landmark revived
CV: $2,300,000, International Realty
“It’s official: I’m a sucker for Devonport homes. You get a two-for-one here, with a pair of beautifully restored former churches. The brick church was built in the 1920s, and the kauri church in 1865 (!!). I’ve planned it all out – the brick church would be for entertaining and events. Imagine the themed dinner parties. I love the idea of having friends and family stay and not having to worry about everyone crammed under one roof.
“The kauri church would be where I would live, especially with that gorgeous view out to the water from the bedroom. Perfect location, dream vibes. The only thing I’d change would be adding a bathroom to the brick church – a minor detail.”

Papamoa perfection
CV: $3,290,000, Bayleys
“I love that this house is right on the beach, and the open living space looks directly out to it, creating a beautiful indoor-outdoor flow. I am imagining beautiful long summers going for beach swims multiple times a day with naps and snacks in between, ending the night around the fire pit.
“In the colder months, spending time in the soaking tub in the internal courtyard would be so relaxing, and would feel like you aren’t even at home.
“I appreciate that the master suite is on its own level, creating a more secluded retreat. Just imagine waking up to beach views every day. And there are enough bedrooms for family and friends to stay. What a dream house.”

Queen Charlotte Delight
POA, Bayleys
“I’m going back to my roots with this one. Marlborough is my home region, and why would you not want to return when the views are like this?
“The loudest sound you’d hear living in this place would be native birds and animals, and the odd jet boat speeding past. Compare that to what I hear each night in my current Auckland flat, and you’ll understand why my dream is to end up back in a place like this. Its boat shed allows for endless summer fun, with everything you’ll need for all water sports and beach activities tucked away inside, and the outdoor dining area would make the dreamiest summer BBQ location. Can you imagine the kids running up the hill after a long day of outside play, meeting you and your girls, having wine, and preparing dinner there? Unreal.
“If I had the budget to buy this home, I would modernise the interior, particularly the kitchen and declutter the living room. Instead, I’d line the walls with lightly colourful artwork and family portraits. The drinks wall beside the kitchen can stay, though…”
