6 steps to an organised kid’s room

“Clean your room” is a phrase uttered too often by parents everywhere. Tidy children can sometimes seem like a contradictory expression. Why not give your child a helping hand when it comes to keeping their room clean by adopting these storage and organisation solutions.

1. Shelve it

Shelves are a great storage solution in any room and will prove invaluable in your child’s room – especially if they don’t have a desk (though they should – we’ll get to that). Shelves can store anything and everything and are the perfect place to display toys, books and family photos.

2. Hang it

Install a rack on the back of the bedroom door or on a free wall. This creates a convenient place to hang school hats and bags when they get home -rather than dumping them at the front door.

3. Study it

A clean and organised space for doing homework is a must for all children. Installing a desk in your kid’s room is not only good for their concentration but also for organisation. Fill their desk drawers with school supplies such as pens, rulers, paper, and exercise books. For younger kids who may not have homework assignments yet, a desk can be used for arts and crafts.

4. Stack it

Invest in some clear plastic boxes or drawers and stack them against a free wall. Label each box clearly – categories could include toys, books, blankets, clothes and miscellaneous. Make sure there’s a place for everything that might need storage and won’t fit in other areas such as the wardrobe or on shelves.

5. Bin it

Children (and some adults) have a tendency to throw rubbish on the ground or the nearest surface if there isn’t a bin nearby. To avoid unsightly and unhealthy messes in your kid’s bedroom, make sure there is a rubbish bin either under their desk or in a corner.

6. Wash it

Buy your child their own washing basket to avoid finding dirty clothes under the bed. With an assigned basket on hand, they can dump their worn clothes straight inside when they take them off. This will not only keep their floors clear, but it will make laundry easier for you too!
