The Block NZ: Week 11 roof terrace reveal

Following a surprise mid-week room reveal, the teams on The Block NZ had to quickly regroup and race to complete their roof terraces. With sweeping views of Rangitoto Island and the Auckland skyline, the terraces had the potential to be the cherry on top to all their hard work. We take a closer look at the how to teams tackled this important space and see if they managed to create an urban oasis.

Andy and Nate

As reigning room reveal champs, Andy and Nate had a lot riding on their roof terrace this week as they hoped to secure their seventh win. Unfortunately their decision to build a pergola in a rusty red colour overshadowed their big budget furniture and impeccable finishing. Despite the pergola being completed to a high standard, the judges thought it looked like “Nana’s carport” and blocked the beautiful view.

Julia and Ali

Along with Andy and Nate’s pergola, another design choice that had many viewers scratching their heads was Julia and Ali’s decision to use grass on their terrace. A lot of people thought the grass was an impractical but judges loved the idea. They thought the use of slow-growing grass, good irrigation and mature hedging helped The Blue Team create “a clever, green space with a real point of difference from the other houses.” The judges also commended the twins on their attention to detail and gave the sisters a solid score which helped them win the room reveal this week.

Ling and Zing

At the beginning of the season, Ling and Zing chose the house at the front of the row to take advantage of its uninterrupted city views and this week their strategic decision finally paid off. The judges said that stepping out onto the roof terrace was like being on the bow of a ship. They thought it felt spacious and loved the details of the quarter-turned decking and LED lighting. Unfortunately the overall styling was a little too pared-back and lacking in wow-factor.

Stace and Yanita

The tiles, the loungers, the garden and the view, there was lots for the judges to love in Stace and Yanita’s roof terrace. They thought the bestie’s choice of furniture and materials created a nice and neutral space that allowed the spectacular view to take centre stage. They also thought the outdoor kitchen set up was great but said it was let down by the lack of a serving table. Stace didn’t agree with the comments, and rebutted saying “it’s a roof top garden…it’s not a rooftop dining room”.
