Auction night on The Block NZ is always unpredictable and often contentious but nothing could have prepared the viewers and contestants for this season’s final results. In a shocking turn of events which resulted in one team making $0 profit and two of the apartments, including the coveted penthouse, being passed in at auction, Lisa and Ribz have won The Block NZ.

The night kicked off with Stacy and Adam choosing the auction order for the teams. The couple decided to pick Lisa and Ribz to go first, Ethan and Sam to go next, followed by themselves and finished up with Sophia and Mikaere. Adam said he hoped that the wallets of the bidders would be looser by the time it was their turn. But, in an ironic twist, the opposite occurred and the money just seemed to dry up.

Off the starting block, Lisa and Ribz secured $50,000 above their reserve. Ethan and Sam, however, could only get their apartment to reserve price and sadly made $0 profit. Then, despite being pegged as the two teams to beat, Stacy and Adam’s apartment was passed in at $1.44 million and Sophia and Mikaere’s penthouse was passed in at $1.455 million. Since the episode has aired, Stacy and Adam’s apartment has been sold by negotiation.

So, as the only team to make a profit on auction night, Lisa and Ribz are the winners of The Block NZ 2019 and will take home $150,000. Their bold apartment was not always to the judges’ taste but Team Yellow stuck to their guns and made history as the third Team Yellow in a row to win The Block NZ. Amy and Stu won $169,500 in 2018 for their sunny townhouse, while Andy and Nate won $131,000 in 2017.

Much like Andy and Nate’s controversial win two years ago, the mood following the auctions was pretty sombre. When asked how they were feeling about their win Lisa said they were sad for their friends. “I’m broken-hearted for these guys,” said Lisa. “It’s hard to be happy.”

One other team we can celebrate with, however, is Ethan and Sam. Despite never winning a room reveal challenge or making any profit on auction night, they proved they’d won over the viewers by being voted as this year’s People’s Choice Award recipients. “Thank you so much New Zealand! We are stoked and hope we have made everyone proud,” says Ethan. They receive a brand new Suzuki S-Cross Prestige.

On tonight’s shock result, Mediaworks Director of Content – TV, Ben Quinn says: “…the market is unpredictable and we acknowledge the result is not what any of us would have wanted for the other teams. We know the guys at Ray White will be working hard over the next few days to get the remaining apartment sold.”

While the reason behind the final results still remains unclear, one thing we know for sure is: #LisasOutTheGate!
