This week’s blank canvas theme on The Block NZ proved to be a tricky one to get right. The contestants needed a lot of creativity to transform their awkwardly shaped stairwell into a cohesive and usable space.

Feedback from the judges this week was a bit of a mixed bag so to help you get inspired for your own home make over we’ve rounded up all the best bits from each of the room reveals.

Despite allegations of cheating, Amy and Stu created another thoughtfully designed space that the judges were impressed by. Their mid-century inspired furniture and perfectly styled bookshelf also gave the landing a comfortable and welcoming feel.

Ben and Tom’s pared-back (and unfortunately unfinished) look may not have won the judges over but their choice of flooring and furniture would work well in most homes. The slimline side table, in particular, is right on trend and is perfect if you have a narrow space.

The judges felt Chlo and Em’s space was a ‘room of two halves’. The grey wallpaper made the room feel too cold but their comfy chaise was the perfect spot to curl up in. The brass floor lamp and textured throw helped to add interesting layers to the space. You can find more tips on how to layer lighting and cushions like an interior designer here.

After trailing at the back of the pack for weeks, Claire and Agni made a surprise comeback with their moody landing and media room. Their use of glass and giant mirror is a great example of how to stop a space with a dark colour palette from feeling overwhelming.
