Bathroom week on The Block NZ was a complete shambles, with only two of the five teams finishing their bathrooms in time. But, the two teams that did manage to complete their family bathrooms, Sophia and Mikaere and reigning Block champions Amy and Stu, both created beautifully designed spaces.

Judge Jason Bonham described Sophia and Mikaere‘s space as a “sellable bathroom” and, while he didn’t know that Amy and Stu were the surprise extra team, he thought their bathroom was elegant, clean and simple.

Get inspired by their bathroom style below and discover where you can shop their looks.

Amy and Stu

With eight room reveal wins under their belts, it’s no secret that Amy and Stu are a design force to be reckoned with. While many of the other teams went for on-trend dark tiles, Amy and Stu decided to keep things bright using white marble tiles and a statement wall of bold pinky/red tiles. Their choice of metallic fixtures and finishing also to helped to add a sense of warmth and texture to the space.

The secret to the whole look working is the way they threaded tonal versions of the statement tile colour through the whole design scheme. They used the towels, planters, artwork and even the writing on the soap dispenser to tell the colour story. The key is that the colours aren’t matchy-matchy but are from the same family.

The easiest way to recreate this look at home is to choose a print or piece of artwork you love and use the colours as inspiration for your theme. Then match accessories like your towels, soap dispenser to it.

But if you’re ready for a major makeover choose all white everything – white tiles, white vanity, white sink, white bathtub and then add brushed metallic fixtures for a textural feel. Don’t forget to choose a wall whether it’s at the back of your bathroom or behind your vanity for your statement tile. Make sure the colour is warm otherwise the space will end up being too cold. Finish with a curved mirror and oval pendant light.

Sophia and Mikaere

This season’s style favourites, Sophia and Mikaere have copped a lot of flack from the other teams about the plans for their apartment design. But all the drama swirling around them is purely down to the fact that they have a vision and they’re good at executing it. Staying true to the moody style of their guest bedroom and kid’s bedroom, Sophia and Mikaere’s family bathroom features the perfect balance of contrasting tones. It’s black and grey without being boring.

With such a narrow space, there wasn’t much room for error. Sophia and Mikaere’s thoughtful layout proves you don’t need tonnes of space for a functional family bathroom. They used extra-large tiles on the floor and the walls, which helps to give the room a sense of space. And by turning the feature brick-style tiles vertically emphasises the height of the bathroom.

Sophia and Mikaere cleverly stopped the space from feeling flat by choosing tiles with a textural element. The addition of plants, light wooden trays and rustic stool also helps to make the bathroom feel welcoming.

If you want to recreate this look at home lighting is key. Big skylights flood this bathroom with light, while thoughtful placements of feature lighting under the vanity and above the bath add warmth to the room. Choose light grey and charcoal grey coloured tiles, match with chrome fixtures and fittings and add softness by choosing waffle textured towels. Finish off with a plant or two and you’ve got yourself a “sellable bathroom”.
