Maddy and Charlotte, the show’s youngest-ever contestants, win The Block Australia 2024

The underdogs of this year's season have walked away $1.65 million richer.

It’s been far from an easy ride for the Sydney sisters, but after a surprise knock-out bid, Maddy and Charlotte have taken home the win, making them the youngest-ever contestants to win The Block.

As the last team to see their house go to auction, the pressure was on for Maddy and Charlotte. Billionaire and The Block auction regular Adrian Portelli had already bought three of the four homes (more on that later), would the sisters be able to make it past their $1.95 million reserve?

In a surprising turn of events, Adrian made it clear he had no plans of stopping at just three Block houses. Out of nowhere, the keen-eyed buyer threw out a single, jaw-dropping bid of $3.5 million granting the sisters a competition-winning $1.55 million in profit, plus the $100k grand prize.

“We are just so grateful, and it’s a very surreal feeling,” said Maddy. “You can’t anticipate how something like The Block will end, but it is the perfect ending for us. I think there is such a special relationship with sisters, and I’m so proud of both of us and how hard we worked.”

“We never thought it would go like this. I could not have had this experience with anyone else but Maddy. We have been in this from the beginning, so it’s an incredible feeling for both of us now,” Charlotte added.

In an even more surprising turn of events, the contestants learnt post-auction that Adrian hadn’t just bought four of The Block properties, but rather all five, revealing that the mysterious, mauve-clad buyer’s agent who secured Kristian and Mimi’s House 5 was in fact bidding on Adrian’s behalf. Needless to say, our jaws were on the floor.

All in all, it was a record-breaking day, with the contestants securing a combined total of $5.43 million in winnings; the highest amount in the history of The Block. This season may have been a rollercoaster, but all’s well that ends well!

Who are Maddy and Charlotte?

Entering the competition at just 24 and 22 years old, Sydney sisters Maddy and Charlotte are the youngest-ever contestants on the show, and the youngest-ever Blockheads to take out the competition.

Maddy, an accounting graduate, and Charlotte, a business graduate, share a budding house-flipping business together, although the pair wouldn’t go as far as to call themselves professional house flippers just yet. Although, we’re sure that’s bound to change after becoming The Block Australia winners.

The two sisters, also known as the Pink Team, famously joined The Block almost half way through the competition, after the shock departure of Perth couple Jesse and Paige. In taking on House 1, the girls not only faced the challenge of inheriting a partially completed home stamped with Jesse and Paige’s ‘modern colonial’ style, but also the challenge of overcoming open hostility from many of the other contestants.

“We feel like we came into this competition and wanted to be true to ourselves, and when things got hard, we could have taken a different road, but we chose to continue to be kind,” Maddy told Homes To Love. “It’s water under the bridge for us. You know, everyone deserves a second chance.”

Who bought Maddy and Charlotte’s house on The Block Australia?

The winning bid no one saw coming came from billionaire Adrian Portelli (AKA ‘Lambo Guy’), who bought Maddy and Charlotte’s House 1 for a whopping $3.5 million. And, as it turns out, Portelli also bought the rest of The Block.

“I think this was my final year, I think this is the final one. So I’m going to hang the boots up after this one. I thought I’d go out with a bang.”

The mega-successful 35-year-old businessman made his first appearance on The Block Australia back in 2022, rolling up to auction day in, of course, a Lamborghini. Since then, Adrian has bought a number of TheBlock homes, including the home of last year’s winners, Steph and Gian.
