Interior lovers rejoice as H&M Home opens in Christchurch and Wellington

Canterbury interior design fans have reason to celebrate with the New Zealand launch of H&M Home. The on-trend and affordable homeware range is stocked in a section of the city’s new H&M store in the recently opened retail complex The Crossing on Cashel Street.

The impressive 2535-square-metre, two-level store, which also stocks women’s, men’s and children’s lines, is the Swedish retailer’s second outlet in New Zealand (its first store opened at Sylvia Park in Auckland late last year.) Wellington welcomed the retail giant and the H&M Home concept, with a store at Queensgate Shopping Centre in Lower Hutt opening on 26 October.

Homeware haven

H&M Home offers linen, servingware, bathroom accessories, decorative pieces and home textiles such as curtains. There’s a line of ‘Premium Quality’ washed-linen pieces such as duvet covers and tablecloths, and an adorable kids’ range of soft toy cushions, animal-motif plates, photo-print towels, storage baskets and more.

Some items are labelled ‘Conscious’ as they are made from recycled, organic or sustainable materials; H&M aims to source all its cotton sustainably by 2020. Other sustainability initiatives include a textile recycling programme.

Inspired by nature

H&M Home’s spring 2017 collection, currently available at the Christchurch store, is inspired by the elements of nature. Vibrant tropical prints contrast with natural materials, neutral colours and minimal designs which reference the brand’s Scandinavian roots. Highlights include artisan-inspired ceramics, vintage-style storage crates and wooden servingware. A hint of glamour comes through in copper and golden tones, luxe velvet and mirrored surfaces. Scented candles and throws create a comfortable, cosy vibe. Outdoor living accessories are right on time for summer.

Hot in the city

The H&M group, which includes brands Cheap Monday, & Other Stories and COS, has more than 4500 stores in 68 countries. H&M Australia and New Zealand manager Hans Andersson visited New Zealand for the Christchurch store opening and said the response to the Home collection had been “overwhelmingly positive”. He added that the brand is “incredibly excited to be able to open the doors to the first H&M store in the South Island”. The city was just as excited – more than 1000 people queued on opening day and, now that the summer collection has landed, that buzz is set to continue.
