5 top garden trends according to Pinterest

Garden trends are a little harder to navigate than interior or fashion trends. A quick scroll through Instagram will expose you to white-washed Scandi-inspired rooms accented with millennial pink, or the latest ‘it’ bag swinging from the arm of an influencer, while the finer details of plants and garden trends fly beneath the radar.

You aren’t alone in the quest to find garden trends. Research by Pinterest found the top five garden trends being pinned are pergolas, garden paths, coastal gardens, urban courtyards and large pots. Read on for our up-to-the-minute guide to garden style.

1. Garden Pathways

A gorgeous garden path in your front yard can take your entry from so-so to stunning. Bricks, pavers, gravel and stone are all options for garden paths, and your selection should be influenced by your garden style, and the style of your house, for a visually cohesive result. A path laid with worn bricks can complement a cottage or country style home, while smooth, square-cut stones or pavers are better suited to contemporary homes and gardens.

2. Large Pots

Rather self-explanatory, large pots are a great way to add a decorative statement to your garden or courtyard, or for potting plants and adding greenery.

3. Urban courtyards

As New Zealand’s population grows and the squeeze to fit more people into our cities continues, our backyards are shrinking, or in some cases, disappearing altogether, giving rise to the urban courtyard. A small, easy to maintain and often paved space, a courtyard can be filled with vertical gardens, pot plants and space-compatible furniture to create your own little oasis within the city.

4. Pergolas

Pergolas are an arched garden structure often covered with climbing or trailing plants that can serve both functional and decorative purposes. Add retractable shades or weather protection to your pergola for year-round protection from the elements, or style your pergola with fabrics, furniture and fairy lights for a romantic finish. For something a little more ‘Secret Garden’, plant climbing varieties at the base of your pergola and watch vines, leaves and blooms take over.

5. Coastal Gardens

Designed to portray a beachy relaxed vibe, coastal gardens look best when the plants are left to grow in their natural shape, rather than a highly manicured finish. Think natural timber decking and furniture to complete the look.
