Emily’s 5 tips

Choose your style and stick to it I’ve chosen an industrial-style look for this kitchen. Black, white, stainless steel, concrete and dark wood are key to achieving this. Marrying these elements with some simple, elegant bulb pendant lights and chic, stylish appliances creates a sleek and harmonious space.

Keep it simple Kitchens take a big chunk out of most people’s renovation budgets, so choosing a kitchen which is timeless and less likely to date is important. Using clean, simple materials like plain white butcher’s tiles, stone benchtops and subtle black/brown woodgrain will stand the test of time and really give you that wow impact.

Modern twist on a classic The black tapware and sink I’ve chosen here are the perfect elements to give this space an up-to-the-minute edge. They are both classic, timeless styles but the original black colourway boosts the kitchen into a new and fresh designer look.

Add accessories later Having a simple, plain backdrop gives you the freedom to be as creative and colourful with your accessories as you like. If you get tired of the latest trends then just swap out or upgrade pieces until you’re happy with the look. This space will go with any colours you throw at it and will never clash.

Kitchen design and consultation process  The guys at Mitre 10 MEGA were an amazing help with this project. The Mitre 10 MEGA kitchen showroom offering was far beyond my expectations, with an incredible designer-looking range that was right on trend. They have the complete kitchen solution: quality New Zealand-made cabinetry, European hardware, flooring, lighting and appliances. Once you’ve got some ideas on your dream kitchen, you can set up a kitchen consultation with one of their helpful in-store designers. They can advise you on every aspect of your project – from measuring your kitchen right through to installing it. They have a flat-pack range straight off the shelf which you can DIY, or the Impressions range, which is custom-designed , professionally installed and has a wider selection. So if you’re on a budget and have the time, you can install your flat-pack kitchen yourself, or Mitre10 MEGA can arrange installation for you, it’s as easy as that! Don’t forget you might need to organise sub-trades if plumbing and electrics need attention.
