1. Low-waste living

2019 was filled with climate crisis strikes and raised awareness of our increasing impact on the environment. Therefore, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that searches for “low-waste living” are up 446 per cent on Pinterest as people look for ways to tread more lightly on the earth.

From easy eco swaps to help reduce plastic and waste to natural cleaning product alternatives and even switching to a plant-based diet, there’s a lot we can do to contribute to low-waste living.

2. Unisex nursery

“They” was the Merriam-Webster word of the year for 2019 – a reflection of a year where thinking beyond binary was addressed. Pinterest predicts unisex or gender-neutral nurseries will be a big interior trend in 2020, with searches up 527 per cent.

Gender-neutral nurseries aren’t, in fact, a new thing. For a while now parents have seen the (mainly style-related) benefits of a nursery that’s not overly pink and frilly or blue and laddish. A gender-neutral nursery doesn’t only allow the child to grow up without gender stereotypes influencing them from the get-go, but also creates a space that your baby can grow into.

3. Home theatre

Whilst it might be hard to match the opulence of Nicole Scherzinger’s home theatre, her velvet-lined room decked out with luxe day beds is the vibe we have in mind when we say “home theatre”.

Comfort is key for a movie room (definitely no straight-backed chairs), dimmable lighting, a large screen or projector, and if you’re really committing, tiered seating and possible a popcorn machine.

With searches for “home theatre” up by 368 per cent, it’s not hard to see why this interior trend is a popular choice.

4. Japanese tub

Deep, relaxing and normally situated in a spot where nature can be soaked up, Japanese tubs offer the ultimate relaxation, so it doesn’t come as a big surprise that Pinterest says they’re up by 563 per cent.

5. Feng Shui decor

Also known as Chinese geomancy, Feng Shui is a traditional Chinese practice that uses energy forces to create a home environment that’s in harmony with those living in it.

Some feng shui interior practices include removing any mirrors from the bedroom to help you increase energy flow and to sleep better.

In the kitchen, feng shui places a lot of importance on the stove as it is associated with the wealth section of your life.

Feng Shui principles also advise against painting your front door black as in invites bad luck into your home.

According to Pinterest, searches for “feng shui” are up 137 per cent, so maybe it’s time to tap into these age-old principles designed to de-stress and re-energise your home.

6. Coffee Station

Kiwis, in particular, will be on board with this home trend. According to Pinterest, “coffee stations” is one of the most popular interior trends right now, with searches up 751 per cent.

Clear out some space on your counter for your very own barista-quality coffee machine, a high-end altar to coffee, if you will.

Make sure there’s enough space for all the gadgets and be sure to have a shelf or rack of beautiful coffee mugs in arms reach (the golden triangle, or kitchen work triangle, applies here too).

7. Thrifted home decor

Taking something old and making it new again.

It could be a simple project like taking two ceramic bowls and creating a chic pot for your indoor plants with them, or a bigger task such as re-upholstering a beloved piece of furniture. Whatever your project, keeping items out of the landfill and putting your creative skills to work will be a popular interior trend in 2020.

8. Outdoor play areas

Ditching the device and encouraging outdoor play is up by 550 per cent says Pinterest. From tree-huts to backyard playgrounds, there are plenty of ideas to keep your kids entertained for hours.
