Four of your summer gardening questions answered

The experts at Kings Plant Barn are here to help

How do I transplant a reasonably mature fruit tree?

This depends on how big it is, what type of tree it is, the time of year and where it is going. If it is a large tree, only specific landscapers will be able to help you as the tree will need to be dug with a digger, have its root-ball wrapped and a crane and truck to transport it. If it is under 1.5m, you are moving it in winter and into free-draining soil, the chances of its survival by doing this with the help of a friend is much higher.

I need to get rid of aphids, what’s the easiest way?

You can use Bugtrol to control aphids on both edibles and ornamentals (including indoor plants). Just make sure not to spray any bee-friendly flowers, and always spray in the evening. If you have an aphid problem on swan plants, do not spray the plant with anything. Take them off with a paper towel and garden gloves.

What’s the difference between compost and mulch, and what do you do with them?

Compost is decomposing material (leaves, twigs, cardboard, grass, food scraps). Once broken down, it can be mixed into garden soil to replenish the structure, encourage worms to the area and add natural nutrients back into the ground. Mulch is layered natural material (usually bark, woodchips or leaves), which is put on top of the soil to help suppress weeds and lock in moisture in the garden around trees, shrubs and perennial plants.

How often should I water my vegetable garden in summer?

Veggies in summer will need watering once a day, or perhaps twice if they are in a greenhouse. Water around the roots of the plants, and in the morning is best.
