Using Resene wallpapers or murals as a framed print is a fantastic way to add drama
Transforming a space into a personalised oasis often requires a touch of creativity and resourcefulness. In this project, we are taking wallpaper and reimagining it as a stunning framed print, adding a unique flair to any room. With just a few materials, you’ll soon have a bespoke piece of wallpaper art that reflects your style and personality.
What you will need to create your own framed wallpaper art print:
• A Resene Wildscape wall mural can be ordered to the exact size you want and in any Resene colour. I used number 11, from the Wildscape Collection, which is Resene Half Bokara Grey, Resene Quarter Bokara Grey, Resene Eighth Bokara Grey, Resene Half Albescent White and Resene Albescent White
• Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat
• Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Hindsight for walls and picture frame
• Wallpaper glue (I used ShurStik)
• Wallpaper smoother
• Paint brush/roller
• Sharp knife
• 1200mm x 2400mm x 4.5mm sheet of MDF (this is great if you are renting or want to take this with you when you move)
• Picture framing timber or moulding, cut to length
• Level
• Screwdriver and small screws
• Picture hooks and fixings
How to create your own framed wallpaper art print:
1. Start by priming the MDF board with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Skip this step if you are applying the wallpaper mural directly to the wall.
2. Prime the precut picture frame moulding at the same time. Once dry, apply two topcoats of Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Hindsight to match the walls, which are also painted in Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Hindsight. Once the MDF sheet is dry, find the centre and draw a level line. If you are fixing it to the wall, then do this on the wall.
3. Mix the wallpaper glue and apply to the wall or board using a brush or roller.
4. The mural arrives as panels and comes with a plan of how to lay the panels out and where to begin. Lay the first panel or drop along the level line, then use the smoother to get everything flat, work from the middle of the drop/panel out towards the top and bottom edges to push any air bubbles out.
5. Repeat this process with all the panels making sure to line the pattern/picture up on the joins. Trim the edges using a sharp knife. If this is going directly on the wall you will want to use the level to make sure the cuts are straight. Don’t be too fussy, it will be covered by the frame.
6. Fix the frame around the edges, I did this through the back with small screws. If you are fixing it directly to the wall, you may choose to glue it on. Finally, fix to the wall. This will vary depending on your situation. You can get heavy duty picture hooks and brackets, or screw directly to the wall.
