The last Resene Colour Home Awards finalist is a moody master bedroom

The revival of this bedroom with a dark, romantic palette has helped to make this Hastings family home ready for the next generation

This dark bedroom revival has transformed this Hastings home

Kate and Tim Robinson wanted to create a unique look and feel for the house they purchased from Tim’s parents for their family of eight. “Not surprisingly, the master bedroom was top of the priority list,” Kate says. “We were very keen to sleep in our own room and not feel like we were using Tim’s parents’ bedroom!”

However, the couple also wanted to honour the work Tim’s parents had done throughout their 40 years in the house, including stripping back most of the original wooden details to their natural state. To offset this, Kate and Tim opted for the intense blue of Resene ‘Indian Ink’ for their walls. “We were both very keen on the idea of a dark and moody colour and the navy gave that feeling but also injected some life as well,” says Kate.

The couple’s brother-in-law, Rich Foster from Foster Painting HB Ltd, painted the room. “We couldn’t be happier with the job he did for us.” And the cherry on top? The dark walls provide a perfect backdrop for the floral arrangements Kate creates for Wilderness Tribe, the floristry and event styling business she’s started with a friend.
