Iona, the former home of director Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin has been put on the market with a price guide of $40 million, according to Domain. The heritage-listed, Victorian Italianate inner-city estate was built around 1880 and remains one of Sydney’s finest trophy homes.

Luhrmann and Martin sold the home in 2017 for around $16 million. The current owners are Mercury Capital stockbroker Tim Eustace and his partner Salvador Panui, who have listed it with premium estate agents, The Agency.

The seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom property sits on 2700 square metres and includes extensive gardens and grounds, a rarity in the cosmopolitan suburb of Darlinghurst. Formerly a hospital, the home features an opulent entry hall, sitting room, drawing room and billiard room, as well as a 19.6-metre mosaic-tiled pool, a Japanese garden, a commercial-grade kitchen with butler’s pantry, a home gym and a six-car garage.

1. The facade and driveway

This heritage home was built around 1880 by pastoralist Edward Chisholm, serving various uses throughout its history including as a private hospital from 1912 to 1977. At 2716 square metres, the property is now the largest residential holding in Darlinghurst.

2. The facade and pool

The home is a beautiful example of Italianate architecture that became popular in the 19th century, particularly the round-arched windows, bracketed cornices and ornate detailing typical of the style.

3. The entry

Nothing quite says ‘welcome’ like a spectacular front door, and this stained-glass beauty has some serious wow factor.

3. The entryway

The stained glass continues in the entryway, where opulent mosaic flooring and breathtaking artworks delight the senses.

5. The staircase

The grand staircase certainly makes an entrance and allows the antique-collecting owners to display their treasures.

6. The sitting room

Do we call this a ‘sitting room’? If Bridgerton is anything to go by, this is the place where we await our gentleman callers and drink tea while someone practices the piano. How fun!

7. The dining room

We can just imagine this space filled with a Gatsby-style party that spills out into every room. We’ll be up in the gallery keeping an eye on things.

8. The billiard room

Nailing the unexpected red theory, this spectacular billiard room is where the girls retire after dinner while the boys clean up.

9. The main bedroom

Drenched in sunlight, the palatial main bedroom features a charming bay window, intricate cornices and glossy dark floorboards. The wallpaper upstairs is rumoured to be designed by Catherine Martin herself.
