Australia’s The Block All Stars saw some famous Aussie duos back on screen, battling it out between other The Block veterans. Here we look back at the 2014 series first room reveal: the bedroom
Mark & Duncan
The two “fat tradies”, who first appeared in the 2010 series, reached new heights with their room. They describe the room as “The Mad Hatter’s tea party with a dash of sophistication” and, more importantly, “not beige!” Their main priorities were to design a bedroom that whispered comfort, but screamed fun.
They have used sheen and shimmer to great effect, but there’s plenty to appeal to those after a little feminine romance – such as that decorative flourish in the flock shades. Pops of yellow in the cushions give the room a burst of sunshine, contrasted with wall finishes in Wattyl ‘Scandinavian Grey’.
The room hits the big time with the fab oversized clock on the marble mantel. Adding to the club-like element are the Montmartre high-back chair and buttoned bedhead, while mirrored bedside tables lend an after-nine elegance.
Josh & Jenna
First appearing on The Block in 2011, Josh and Jenna wanted their bedroom to be an oasis of luxury, calmness and serenity.
Simplicity rules in the bedroom of Josh and Jenna, who have cleverly combined designer cred with bargain buys – the classic Foscarini Binic table lamp and the Zuster side table rest easily with the sheet set, valance and vases, all from Spotlight. The couple have layered on the texture, with throws and a combi-toned wool floor rug, as well as the bedhead they created themselves, which features faux doeskin from Spotlight.
The rich, natural palette, from deep charcoal and chocolate – thanks to the floors stained in Feast Watson ‘Black Japan’ – to warm wheat tones, ensures a sense of calm and tranquility throughout.
Phil & Amity
Nicknamed ‘the originals’, Phil and Amity first appeared on The Block all the way back in 2003. With natural motifs and fresh, breezy colours, this couple’s main bedroom is like a breath of sea air.
The feather artwork and coral allude to the beachside location, as does the teak bedside lamp with its handcrafted look. But surprises such as the bold red and the geometrics in the bedside table add pizazz.
As a no-fuss floor option for when sand is traipsed into the house, the original boards have been stained and sealed in Synteko Urethane. And, for that chirpy touch and that extra er, tweet, Phil and Amity have finished off with a quirky parrot cushion.
Dan & Dani
Hailing from the 2012 series, Dan and Dani wanted to create a room that was true to their style, but in keeping with the heritage house.With a slinky bedhead and exotic bird of paradise cushion, Dan and Dani have given their main bedroom a hint of the orient.
It’s cool, sophisticated and comfortable all at the same time. The artwork by Andrew O’Brien unifies the colour palette of turquoise and magenta on a white and grey background while the charcoal throw echoes the tones of the Wattyl ‘Silver Shadow’ on the walls. Bedlinen from Kmart complements the embroidered quilt, which adds a touch of opulence.
A Xavier Pauchard Tolix replica chair is a bedside table with a difference, while the table made by Dan is a practical touch for lazy Sundays in bed.
