Spacecraft Architects

Space Craft Architects was formed in 2012 by architects Caroline Robertson and Tim Gittos. Their design experience and knowledge ranges from hands-on construction of furniture to full house builds, and their portfolio boasts residential, commercial and public contributions.

With a commitment to producing affordable architecture that is both fitting for climate and context, they have built an impressive and varied portfolio of work across the country. They showcased their innovative abilities when they built two homes on a difficult sloping site in Wellington. After cutting their teeth with their celebrated design of the ‘Dogbox’, a finalist for Home of the Year 2013, they decided to build a home for themselves.

Due to the cost prohibitive nature of renting (and building) in the city, they decided to pool their resources with some old friends of theirs. When they found a site that had little interest in Miramar, it was also very cheap – which was perfect. Although the land was marginal they managed to split the site halfway down and to build two incredible homes. These act not only as an example of density done well, but you would also be hard-pressed to find a more appropriate architectural design to reflect the climate of modern-day home ownership.
