Auckland based Evelyn McNamara decided to create her own architectural firm after five years working for a small Auckland practice; Evelyn McNamara Architecture (EMA). McNamara’s practice specialises in high-end residential new builds and renovations and has built an enviable portfolio catering to a wide range of briefs.
With a strong emphasis on clean, simple, modern lines McNamara still prides her architectural style on being present yet flexible so to adhere to numerous sites and client’s needs. Being able to build homes that engage with the surrounding environment is a primary focus in McNamara’s work, and she designs homes with an environmentally-friendly approach. Although her speciality is in the residential arena, she has also done some commercial work during her career.
McNamara’s own New Zealand holiday home on Waiheke Island is a great example of her forward, yet humble architectural style. Believing that the holiday home new-build market has strayed too far from the quintessential ‘Kiwi Bach’ she wanted to create something simple yet sleek. The spectacular result showcases her ability to think outside the box, while creating something contemporary yet intimate is a testament to her design style and ingenuity.
