Crosson Architects

Crosson Architects are an Auckland based practice with an impressive portfolio of award-winning work. Past projects include residential, commercial, master planning and more. Director Ken Crosson and his team have won numerous accolades both locally and internationally.

Crosson’s 2003 Home of the Year winning bach that he designed for himself and his family is a prime example of his abilities – the timber box resting on a manuka-clad hillside opens up to reveal unimpeded views stretching far out to sea. Crosson designed the beach house provided a deliberate contrast to his inner-city Auckland villa. “It was an attempt to try to create another experience,” he says. “I wanted to get back to nature and give my kids something like the lifestyle I had enjoyed in my childhood.”

15 years later, Crosson was in contention for the prestigious award once again with another Coromandel design ‘DNA House’ being shortlisted. Designed for a New York-based family, this “barefoot love shack” is enveloped by metal screens imprinted with the DNA of the family members. Living areas are on the top floor, with two bedrooms and bathrooms below. A ladder provides access to a roof deck.

As if his vast national recognition isn’t impressive enough, his Titirangi design ‘The Red House’ was shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival awards ‘house’ category. A homage to playfulness, this red cube on a Titirangi hillside is like a sculpture made with oversized Lego bricks. Slender, sky-seeking manuka and kanuka populate the section which, beyond the shared drive, drops into a valley.
